first -- breaking developments on to big stories -- the family of suspected movie shooter, jason holmes peeks out for the first time. and less than 24 hours after the joe paterno statue comes down, penn state is punished heavily. we're getting a first look now at the accused mastermind in one of the deadliest shooting massacres in recent history. >> the mug shot of jason holmes was released just hours after learning the charges he faces. >> there is a lot to discuss. spokesperson for the family is talking and holmes himself sets for the first time before a judge. in his first court appearance, a dazed-looking jason holmes

remains silent. he could face the death penalty in connection with the friday morning feeder shooting spree in aurora colorado, a claim doesn't lives and left many other seriously -- that claimed a dozen lives and left many others seriously injured. >> i feel like i want to make sure justice is taken with this man and support everyone has been to this. >> for the first time, we are hearing from the suspect's family. >> the family want to reiterate that their hearts go out to the victims and their families. >> the family attorney spoke to the media and says the family fears for their safety. they say they do not want to comment about relatives suspected of gunning down unsuspected -- unsuspecting moviegoers. >> the family has decided not to discuss their relationship with james at this time. >> despite numerous accounts and

they quick arrest, they remain vigilant in their prosecution. >> we are looking at the evidence and we would never assume this would be a slam- dunk. >> jason holmes is being held without bond. on monday, we will hear more about the charges he will face. >> the senate observed a moment of silence for the victims of that massacre. the democratic majority leader said it's important to mourn the dead and honor their lives. mitch mcconnell read aloud the names of the 12 people killed. >> now for the other big story of the day -- the extensive punishment debt -- dish out to penn state university. they stopped short of giving penn state the death penalty but the school received the harshest penalty in 25 years. we start our coverage live from state college with reaction from all sides.

>> another tough day here at penn state. yesterday, the university toward on the statue honoring the late coach, joe paterno. today, the n.c.a.a. toward on the football program. many of those coming to the place where until yesterday joe paterno's statue lorded over the football stadium and the entire campus remained defiant in their defense of the man. >> they can take down his statue and they can take away his record but a no one can ever take away those memories he created for students as well as the student athletes. >> but it may be years before such glory days return. the n.c.a.a. has hit a lion's heart -- a $60 million fine, a four-year ban from ballgames and every win since 1998 wiped off the record books. and they lose 20 football scholarships a year for four

years. >> we can impose sanctions that affect they -- that reflect the magnitude of these terrible acts and insure that penn state will rebuild and athletic culture that went horribly awry. >> their reaction comes responds to report that joe paterno and others led a decade and a half long cover-up of jerry sandusky's serial abuse of children. most of those we spoke to on campus say they understand that but they don't like the penalties. >> this was sandusky. it was not joe paterno and it was not penn state. >> penn state is a good and strong university and i'm certain we will come back from this. it's going to take some time, but we will come back. >> that is the plan here on campus. statements were issued by the new football coach and president of the university. they said they knew the penalties for coming and the schools transit -- the schools transgressions were bad and they

would not fight what the n.c.a.a. has handed down. >> 111 of his victories have been vacated from the record books. that means bobby dodd and now holds the top spot in the record books. we will have more on the impact of the punishment coming up later in sports. >> more now on a breaking story we first brought you at 5:00 -- former astronaut sally ride, the first american woman to go into space has died after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer. she joined nasa in the late 1970's and 1983 made a historic turning into space. president obama called her a national hero and powerful role model who inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars. sally ride was 61 years old. >> federal prosecutors are

putting the pentagon shooter under psychiatric evaluation. he pleaded guilty to firing shots at the pentagon and other buildings in the region. the lawyers say his client was schizophrenic. prosecutors say he is not mentally ill. a fire on board a bus will cause problems for commuters in montgomery county tomorrow. the buses will run on a holiday schedule for the fourth straight week day. replacement buses are in the works. >> to the presidential race -- president obama is campaigning out west defending his foreign- policy record before the veterans of foreign wars in reno, nevada. he says he ended the war in iraq responsibly and is bringing an end to the conflict in afghanistan. mitt romney will of that -- will address the vfw tomorrow. >> coming up, a plea for help --

recipients to get out the vote on election day. >> it's the latest allegation of wrongdoing in a campaign remains under federal investigation. >> i don't know of the existence of any such list. >> all of these things happened in his campaign that he has no idea about. >> it involves several people in housing complexes located in precincts grey won by large margins. this comes after supporters have pleaded guilty to various campaign violations. >> every time they look, they're going to find something. >> as the investigations continue, he continues with the day to day business of the city. even a routine speech at the aids conference was sidetracked by protestors upset with a lack of housing.

>> we could have heavy to severe thunderstorms. but nothing to worry about tonight. the line of storms kind of broke apart. one of our rooftop cameras looking to the city in arlington, it is kind of hazy and the cloud cover has kept the temperatures down. we still managed to get temperatures to 90 in many spots. humidity levels are starting to creep up. you will feel the increase in moisture. 90 today even without the benefit of much of sunshine. the average high as dropped a degree as we are now statistically past the highest point of summer. we will see about that. 102 degrees is the record set in washington. temperatures are plenty warm.

abundant sunshine in detroit. 106 degrees in st. louis. all kinds of record drought. we'll get a taste tomorrow and a cold front. cooling down on wednesday and the heat will slowly build in. the core of the heat will stay out here and we will get temperatures at or a little above average by the weekend. showers and storms moving but it broke apart. for tonight, nothing more than an isolated sprinkle. here comes the cold front tomorrow -- when the head of the front pushing temperatures into the '90s but a good chance of thunderstorms. because of this front coming through, there could be some
